Installing decking on a balcony has specific technical requirements due to height and limited space. Terrapac, based in Belgium, details the challenges of a project completed in Brussels two years ago.
In 2020, Terrapac, specialists in Silvadec composite decking installation, completed an 11m² balcony on the 8th floor of a building in Brussels!
Project Specifics
Located on the 8th floor, the narrowness and height of the site posed unique challenges for this project.
Material delivery was also a constraint, as indoor delivery was impossible. All materials had to be transported using a lift.
The team had to be resourceful to cut and handle the decking safely without risking harm to lower floors or pedestrians below. Safety was a basic but essential aspect!
On-site planning focused on ensuring the balcony decking's durability by creating a solid structure. It was crucial to avoid dismantling the decking later for understructure repairs. Terrapac installed an EPDM waterproof membrane under the joists to prevent moisture from affecting the tiles, which could lift over time due to frost.
Ensuring Slip Resistance
For this project, Silvadec Atmosphère 180mm decking boards in Cayenne Gray were chosen. With a brushed finish, they provide excellent slip resistance (R13 rating according to DIN 51130), ensuring safety even in wet conditions.
Project Aesthetics
The Cayenne Gray color adds a clean, bright touch to the balcony. Durable and color-stable, the Atmosphère boards are colored throughout, ensuring long-lasting consistency.
We sincerely thank Terrapac for sharing this experience!
